This is full on. The Israelites find themselves face to face with a God so holy they’re left trembling before Him. They are given the Ten Commandments — new rules of living that show who they belong to. The Israelites find themselves stuck and starving in the desert… and they start their grumbling. What is your view on God? Is it a true image of who He really is, or a warped one? As God parts the Red Sea for His people and destroys His enemies the Egyptians, we see that God is not only a Saviour, He’s also a Warrior King who does everything for His own glory. In this last brutal plague we see how the horror of God’s judgement on Egypt ‘passes over’ His own people. This event has real significance for Christians – as we too have had God’s judgement ‘pass over’ us through the horrific death of Jesus. Let’s not forget what it cost to save us!

The liberation of God’s people comes at a price – the Egyptians have to face God’s judgement. Plague after plague, God shows us He’s a God of both salvation and judgement, and despite how it looks, He’s got it sorted!

Moses is chosen by God to be the liberator of His people, but he’s not too keen on taking on the job! God’s patience with Moses shows His compassionate and gentle nature, and His powerful appearance to Moses in a burning bush demonstrates His incredible holiness and awesome authority.

As we kick-off this new series in Exodus, we see how our God is a God who preserves His people and always sticks to His promises. It’s awesome that we’re part of a protected people, so let’s throw ourselves into being a part of that!
